Mapping Women’s Leadership in Political Parties: A Comprehensive Assessment Exercise

As part of our Promoting Inclusive and Accountable Governance in Somaliland project, supported by Heinrich Boell Stiftung (HBS) International Programs, Horn of Africa BMZ, Regional Programme, we have conducted mapping exercise on Women’s Leadership in Political Parties: A Comprehensive Assessment Exercise.

The mapping exercise was carried from 18th September to 2nd October 2024. The main purpose of this activity is to identify the number and percentage of women in leadership roles within political parties such as party chairs, secretaries, or committee heads. It also meant to find out and identify key positions women are seeking in public offices if their party wins November election. Additionally, the exercise was looking for which party has clear and actionable or policies to promote to women’s representation and participation in decision-making in post presidential election.

This exercise is participated by the three political parties of Wadani , Kulmiye  and Ucid  and the two most effective  political associations of Barwaaqo and Kaah. The assessment focused on three key areas within each party which are :

  1. Women’s Representation – The number and proportion of women in leadership roles.
  2. Women’s Participation – The level of involvement women have in party decision-making processes.
  3. Women’s Influence – The extent to which women can shape party policies and strategies.
